10 Pictures Of A Delhi You've Never Seen Before

Ever wondered how Delhi was when your grandparents were your age? When flyovers were unheard of and metro rail was stuff seen in sci fi movies. When trams ran in Chandni Chowk and horse drawn carriages were the main mode of transport for the average Delhi-ite. Do we have your attention? Good. Read On

1. Connaught Place was designed as a part of Lutyens Delhi, and is one landmark that defines the capital even after all these decades. This picture was taken when the then Premier of the Soviet Union, Nikolai Bulganin visited India in 1955.

2. In the 50's parking space in Connaught  Place was so easy to find. Few people had cars and finding a parking spot was the least of people's problems.

3. This was Chandni Chowk before all the illegal encroachments made the place an eye sore.

4. Today, our President travels in snazzy cars. But nothing can beat the classiness of a cavalcade of horse drawn carriages. Here’s our first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1950.

5. Your only association with tongas is probably Dhanno in Sholay, but in your grandparents time they were the primary mode of transport in Old Delhi.

6. No, this wasn’t the venue of a dharna. Just the mess left behind by the crowds after witnessing the Republic Day Parade at India Gate in 1955.

7. Ok, so we won’t blame you if you have no idea what this contraption is. It’s called a Hydroleria Plane that was designed in the 50’s to run both on water and land.

8. Yes Delhi used to have trams too. Plying in the heart of Old Delhi

9. If you want to ride a bicycle, Rajpath is perhaps the loveliest road you can find to indulge your passion. In the 50’s such scenes were common.

10. And finally here’s a scene from a Ram Leela in the 1950’s. Some things don’t change with time!
